On 5 May 2013 it will be 200 years since the world-famous Danish theologian and philosopher Søren Kierkegaard was born.

He is one of Denmark’s most influential cultural figures, and his works have been translated into a great many languages. As a prelude to the 200-year anniversary of his birth, Post Danmark will issue a stamp featuring a portrait of Kierkegaard. The stamp will be issued jointly with Posta Faroe Islands.

The single individual’s personal decision:
Søren Kierkegaard explored many issues that continue to occupy us today. Anxiety, faith, seduction, love and despair are some of the subjects he returned to again and again. For Kierkegaard, it was the lot of modern people that, while we have countless opportunities, resources and a lot of free time to express ourselves, we are at the same time burdened by the doubts, fears and responsibilities this gives rise to. Kierkegaard’s ideas are essentially about what it means to be human, and therefore his thinking may be said to apply to people of any nationality or religion.

SAK
Kierkegaard often signed his writings with the initials of his full name, Søren Aabye Kierkegaard: SAK. He found much of the inspiration for his books on his regular walks in Copenhagen, but his fiancée, Regine Olsen, was also a rich source of material. After Kierkegaard broke off their engagement, he continued to write about her in his books and diaries.

Kierkegaard’s collected writings comprise about 40 books and an equal number of newspaper articles. There are also several volumes of diaries and many letters.
