Valdemar’s Castle The redbrick walls of Valdemar’s Castle rise high above the green coastline and windswept beach at Thurø Sound. The castle was commissioned by Christian IV and was completed in 1644. It was a gift to the king’s favourite son Valdemar Christian, after whom the castle is named. No expense was spared to give Valdemar a princely residence of the first rank, and this Renaissance castle was even bigger than King Christian IV’s own Rosenborg Castle. However, Valdemar Christian never really got to enjoy his castle, since he did not settle on the island of Tåsinge, but instead toured around Europe as a military general. During Denmark’s wars with Sweden in the mid-1600s, the castle was badly damaged. The battered castle was taken over by the naval hero Niels Juel, who was given it as a reward for his valiant efforts in the Battle of Køge Bay. He saved the castle from ruin and had it rebuilt in the Baroque style. Since then, Valdemar’s Castle has belonged to the noble family of Juel; it is now owned by the family’s 12th generation. Niels Juel’s grandson of the same name had the castle rebuilt and enlarged in the mid-18th century. The stables, tea pavilion and grand yellow gatehouses all stem from this period. The stamp shows the northern gatehouse. The castle has been open to the public since 1974, but the owners still live in the main building. For much of the year, visitors can see the castle’s beautiful rooms, decor and many historical details. In the Niels Juel Room you can see the naval hero’s famous sea-chest, which he brought with him on his campaigns. In the same room hangs Jacob Conning’s large full-length portrait of Niels Juel from 1796, part of which is faintly visible in the background of the stamp design.

Egeskov Castle on southern Funen was built as a fortress by the vassal Frands Brockenhuus in 1554. The dramatically located Renaissance building was built on oak piles in the middle of a lake, and it is said that an entire oak forest was felled to provide timber for the massive foundations. The external walls are equipped with machicolations and numerous gun slits through which the soldiers could fire on the enemy. The building could only be entered via a drawbridge.
