| Tecumseh was a visionary Shawnee War Chief who created a confederacy of First Nations with the intent of stopping American expansion. He supported the British in exchange for help in establishing and protecting the land of his people. | Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, was born in Guernsey, part of the British Channel Islands. He joined the British Army at age 15 and quickly rose through the ranks. He was assigned to Canada in 1802 and eventually earned the responsibility of defending Upper Canada, now Ontario | First stamp issue in a series marking the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and Canada Post’s first joint stamp issue with the British Channel Islands’ Guernsey Post.
The War of 1812 was fought along the borders of present-day Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces. Two of the most important leaders, British Major-General Sir Isaac Brock and Shawnee War Chief Tecumseh, are honoured by paired portraits that show them facing each other (separated by perforations) with expressions of mutual respect.
Chief Tecumseh is shown with encampments surrounding him, underlining that he has united several tribes under his command.
Behind Brock’s profile is a landscape with an early European settlement, like the ones he defended against the American invaders. To honour both Brock’s role in Canadian history and his birthplace, these stamps are Canada Post’s first joint issue with Guernsey Post.
Brock, Tecumseh and the War of 1812
Together, Brock and Tecumseh won a decisive and bloodless victory at Detroit, Michigan, despite being outnumbered and outgunned. Soon after, Brock was shot and killed during the battle of Queenston Heights on the Niagara escarpment.
